Hospitalist Scholars

Interdisciplinary Workshops, Conferences, and Ethics Case Conferences

A unique feature of graduate training at the University of Chicago is the major emphasis placed on workshop participation and presentation by scholars. Our workshop system is a valuable means of learning skills of critical analysis and research design, as well as creating opportunities to interact closely with faculty from both within and outside the University. Workshops consist of weekly and monthly seminars of various foci in which faculty, students, and visiting scholars present their ongoing research for critical review by their colleagues. The degree of senior faculty involvement and participation in these workshops is unique and provides scholars with an unparalleled opportunity to engage with leading faculty in related fields. Scholars in the Clinical Medical Ethics Program will also attend the MacLean Center’s weekly interdisciplinary lecture series on ethical issues in essential and emerging healthcare topics and the weekly interdisciplinary medical ethics case consultation service conference. Last, Scholars will attend the Annual MacLean Center fellows conference, which occurs each fall.

In addition to attending these workshops and conferences Scholars are expected to also present their own independent work. Learning to share and disseminate work via presentation at workshops and conferences is a highlight of the program, and prepares Scholars for presentations at leading local, regional and national meetings, as well as the publication of their work in high impact journals. Participating in the Hospitalist Scholars program allows for an opportunity to learn this vitally important skill and prepare future academic clinicians for personal and professional success.
