Clinical Service

In addition to attending on the hospital medicine service, Scholars on the Clinical Medical and Bioethics pathway are expected to take call on the ethics consult service as a Fellow (year 1)/Senior Fellow (year 2). The ethics consult service is staffed by 1 attending and 2 fellows, and covers all University of Chicago Medicine ethics consults (inpatient, ambulatory, research). Covering the ethics consult service is a critical experiential activity that provides scholars the opportunity to apply their knowledge and training in medical ethics to resolve routine and complex ethical dilemmas that arise across clinical settings and contexts.

Interdisciplinary Workshops, Conferences, and Ethics Case Conference

Scholars in the Clinical Medical Ethics Program will attend the MacLean Center’s weekly interdisciplinary lecture series on ethical issues in important and emerging healthcare topics, and the weekly interdisciplinary medical ethics case consultation service conference (both held on Wednesdays). Additionally, Scholars will attend the Annual MacLean Center fellows conference, which takes place in the fall quarter. Scholars are also expected to present their own independent work at the MacLean Center Faculty workshops which occur monthly during the academic year, and submit their work the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) Annual Meeting.

History and National Recognition

The Hospitalist Scholars Clinical Medical Ethics Program combines two of the oldest and most well know training programs in the nation, the University of Chicago Hospitalist Scholars Research fellowship and the MacLean Center for Clinical and Medical Ethics fellowship. MacLean Center graduates have gone on to direct ethics centers around the world, publish hundreds of articles in the field of clinical ethics, and hold more than 20 endowed university professorships. Graduates of the MacLean Center have also successfully received career development funding from the NIH, and gone on to pursue independent funding to support their work.
